Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)

Purpose

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at San José City College is a cross-campus and district team of professionals that meets regularly to identify and assist the college’s investigation and response to students or student groups who display concerning or disruptive behaviors that threaten health and safety.  The team is responsible for addressing and responding to referrals or reports relating to behavioral and mental health concerns of students.  The team does not adjudicate, discipline, or impose sanctions against students.

 

Charge

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at San José City College is responsible for reviewing referrals and reports submitted to determine the credibility of behavior threatening the health and safety and to assist with a coordinated response by college and district officials, in alignment with community-based organizations or law enforcement, if applicable.

 

Primary Functions

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at San José City College primary functions include:

  1. Review and respond to referrals and reports submitted to assess situations involving students or student groups who display concerning or disruptive behaviors; and engage with reported individuals in a process aimed at deescalating and correcting the behavior;
  2. Provide consultation and support to members of the college community in assisting individuals who display concerning or disrupting behaviors;
  3. Recommend appropriate intervention strategies; connect individuals with available college and community-based resources; and
  4. Monitor individuals who have displayed concerning or disruptive behaviors to ensure the health and safety of college personnel, students, and community.

 

Affiliation

San José City College is an institutional member of the National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (NABITA), a national organization dedicated to promote student safety and well-being by identifying proactive ways to address the growing need for centralized care and support for at-risk individuals.  The College’s institutional membership includes, but is not limited to, access to a professional listserv, weekly newsletters, resource materials including books and webinars, risk assessment tools and rubric, and certification courses.  Additional information on NABITA is available online at https://www.nabita.org/.

Behavioral Intervention Team Members

Students, employees, and the community are encouraged to contact any member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at any time for consultation no matter how insignificant the situation may seem.  All are encouraged to assist the college in preventing crises before they occur.
